The 10 Best Things for Your Child on Holiday

De 10 leukste dingen voor jouw kind op vakantie

However, every year parents still ask themselves the question; what is actually fun to bring on holiday for my little one? Well, in this blog we are going to give you an extra helping hand with that.

Whether you're relaxing on a sunny beach, exploring rugged mountain landscapes, or discovering cool historical cities, one thing is for sure: the right preparation is key to ensuring your child has a wonderful time. That's why we've created the ultimate list of the "10 best things for your child on holiday" which can provide an extra dose of inspiration.

1. Colouring in the back seat

For many people, the (summer) holiday to France, Spain or Italy or even a bit closer begins with a (long) car journey. As every parent has undoubtedly experienced; this can be quite a hassle with (small) children. It is therefore important to provide enough entertainment so that they don't start messing around from minute one, because then the journey will last a very long time.

To keep the kids busy in the back seat, colouring always works very well! The only downside; it can make quite a mess, so be careful, we are not responsible for the upholstery!

2. Games, games and more games

Playing games is extremely popular on holiday, and why not start in the car? For older kids, there are plenty of well-known games, but there are also quite a few fun games on the market for the little ones. For holidays, we at Tokkelientje are big fans of games in a tin for children aged 3 and up.

In the series below, a child discovers more about various topics such as:What does a rabbit eat? Can you name three red fruits and how many wheels does a car have? Curious children want to know everything! The colourful tin is filled with 50 cards with fun questions for young children, very handy for in the car.

But the Magnetibooks from Janod are also great fun to play with on the go. They have different themes; from sports to the universe and from princesses to racers. Open the book and create the same picture as shown on the card on the magnetic background, and many new things can be discovered!

3. No holiday without books

Holiday, the perfect time for many people to enjoy a good read, and why not for children too! Reading on holiday isn't just for adults; kids also love the adventures they can experience in their books. Unlike adult books, there are many types of children's books available. So, not just boring books full of small print, but plenty of activity books.

Think, for example, of erasable books where you can create beautiful artworks, search & find books where your little one can endlessly explore, and look-around-you books that help your child discover the world.

4. Travel case as a playset

For children, this is the ideal travel case for on the go, besides their clothes. Everything is included for a long or short trip. Think of your passport, a ticket, and a camera to capture your journey. If you are travelling for a long time, the eye mask comes in handy for a nice nap in the car or at the campsite. On the map you can see where you are or where you are going, and if boredom strikes, there is a cheerful balloon game to play with your travel companions, so it's ideal and suitable for children from 3 years old, happy holidays!

5. Beach toys and spades

A classic among holiday toys: beach toys and spades. Few places are as wonderful for children as the sea. Playing in the water, digging in the sand, and happily messing with mud. How delightful! To make this wonderful place even more fun, you can bring spades, moulds, buckets, sieves, and watering cans. With a well-equipped set of beach toys, children can build impressive sandcastles, design intricate canal systems, and create all sorts of sand sculptures.

In addition, beach toys not only offer fun but also educational experiences. Children learn to cooperate when they realize a large project in the sand together and develop their motor skills while digging, scooping, and building. Even the simplest items, such as a sieve or a watering can, can provide hours of fun. They can search for treasures in the sand and bring water to their sand projects, teaching them about the workings of water and sand.

6. Sun hat to protect the little head

Summer holidays often involve a lot of sun. Wonderful, of course, but for the delicate skin of small children, the sun can also pose a threat. Sunscreen and shade certainly help, but the little head still catches quite a bit of sun! It is important to pay extra attention to protecting your child from harmful UV rays.

Fortunately, there are ways to protect your child stylishly and effectively. With the bucket hats from Barts or the Sun cap from Lil Boo you're all set. These headwear items are specially designed to offer optimal protection against the sun. They cover your child's head and ensure that sensitive skin is less exposed to direct sunlight. Moreover, they are made of materials that block UV radiation, so your child can play carefree.

Besides their protective properties, these hats and caps are also super trendy! With fun designs and cheerful colours, they perfectly match your little one's summer outfits. This way, you can enjoy the sun without worries, while your child looks fashionable. A real win-win situation. For all trendy sun hats and more choices, click here!

7. How cool; their own backpack

Mom and Dad lug themselves silly with all the stuff, for themselves, but certainly also for the kids. It would be nice if they also carried some things themselves! Well, good news; they can. Of course, you don't let them carry the heaviest items, but children really enjoy being able to help Mom and Dad.

With this beautiful backpack with a deer from Mikk Line, they can take a few spades or a game to the beach themselves! And also handy; it can, of course, simply be used as a school backpack after the holidays.

8. Patience is put to the test

Going on holiday is, of course, great fun once you're there! On the way to the holiday destination, the patience of both parents and, especially, children can be severely tested. Hours of waiting for the plane, endless queues for the rental car, or spending hours on the motorway – for children's extremely short attention spans, it's quite an ordeal!

That's why it's nice to have something with you on holiday to avoid the annoying waiting, impatience, and boredom. Patience games can offer a solution here! For example, the Janod patience game or a metal puzzle; they can certainly keep them entertained for a while, and they are also easy to carry.

9. Well, it still might rain on holiday

Driven all the way to Italy for a sunny holiday, and it still rains (and it's nice and sunny in the Netherlands, you'll always see)! No matter how high the chance of sun is on holiday, a shower can always come along. And that's not bad at all, as long as you have the right clothes with you.

This children's umbrella from Djeco will at least keep the mini-me dry!

10. Sunglasses are also a fashionable accessory!

Wearing sunglasses is not only crucial for children's protection, but it can also be a fashionable accessory that enriches their holiday experience. At Tokkelientje, you will find a selection of stylish sunglasses from brands such as Izipizi, Mikk Line, and Lil' Atelier. These sunglasses combine protection, style, comfort, and durability, making them perfect for children. With sunglasses, parents can be sure that their children's eyes are well protected from harmful UV rays. Moreover, children can show off their own style with a design that truly suits them.

So what are you waiting for? Buy trendy sunglasses for your children and let them enjoy the summer sun with confidence and style!
