Everything you need to know about children's clothing sizes

The days are getting shorter, the sun is lower in the sky, and at Tokkelientje, we're preparing for a new season. While we're still enjoying the warm summer days, the first autumn and winter collections are arriving. It's a joy to open the boxes and fill the racks with warm colors, soft fabrics, and cozy outfits for the colder days. The different brands can be beautifully combined, allowing you to effortlessly create a stylish and comfortable wardrobe for your child.

Whether you come in to browse together, prefer to stroll through the racks yourself, or shop online, one question we often hear is: what size fits my child and how do the different children's clothing brands fit?

At Tokkelientje, you'll find children's clothing from size 50 to 152. Whether it's for a newborn baby or a cool 12-year-old, we have it in stock. Since children can grow significantly in autumn and winter, it's important to choose the right size. In this blog, we'll explain how children's sizes work and how most of our brands fit.

Measure to know

To choose the right size of children's clothing, it's important to measure your child from crown to heel. This is easier for a child who can stand than for a baby, but measuring still ensures you can choose as accurately as possible between different sizes, especially for a baby. Then use the overview below as a guideline.

Baby size overview

  • Size 50: 0-1 month (40-50 centimeters)
  • Size 56: 1-2 months (51-56 centimeters)
  • Size 62: 2-4 months (57-62 centimeters)
  • Size 68: 4-6 months (63-68 centimeters)
  • Size 74: 6-9 months (69-74 centimeters)
  • Size 80: 9-12 months (75-80 centimeters)
  • Size 86: 12-18 months (81-86 centimeters)

Remember that these overviews use average figures. Not every child grows at the same rate, and not every child reaches the same height. If you're in doubt between two sizes, always choose the larger one!

How do the various clothing brands sold at Tokkelientje fit?

Another important aspect when choosing the right size is knowing how brands fit. Each brand has its specific fit, which can initially make it a bit more challenging. If your child has worn clothes from a particular brand before, you can use that to your advantage! To help you out, here's a guideline per brand. If you're still unsure, come to our store in Leiden to try things on with your child, or send us a message. We'll happily measure a piece of clothing for you!
